The last time a person visited the moon was in December 1972, during NASA's Apollo 17 mission. Astronauts say the reasons are budgetary and political, not scientific or technical. A US lander recently landed on the moon, and NASA could take people there by 2026 at the earliest. Astronauts on the Apollo missions of the 1960s and '70s collected rocks, took photos, performed experiments, planted flags, and then came home. But those stays didn't establish a lasting human presence on the moon.
