The enthusiast world loves inline-six engines - engines with six cylinders in a row - and BMW is an example of an automaker with a long history of inline-sixers. As we'll see later, the format has its benefits, and the German brand has kept the inline-six alive since its earliest versions in the 30s. Not all BMW inline-sixes are equal and although some - such as the N52 - stand out in history, the BMW engine has gone through a constant evolution that has improved the design over time.

When the key turns in the ignition of a fourth-gen Ford Mustang GT - depending on the model year - one of two V8 engines under the hood, from 1994-1996, it was a familiar old 5.0-liter pushrod (OHV) V8 that deserves its own deep dive. In 1996, another engine was fitted: the 'Modular' V8. Ford's modular 4.6 isn't just different from the old Windsor engine, it is also part of a larger family and greater legacy that continues today.

Flagship coupes have been around for a long time and have been able to stand the tests of time too, but back in the 90s, the two-door, fixed-roof car was much more in vogue than it is today. There were the sports coupes that have always been around, but the coupe format existed in a larger circle across multiple segments - personal luxury coupes, sports coupes, and even affordable coupes (we'll look at some of these below).

As the NHTSA states: "A motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old can be lawfully imported into the U.S. without regard to whether it complies with all applicable FMVSS" (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards). This exception is commonly known as the '25 Year Rule'. It is no secret, especially with enthusiasts who wish to import a model that wasn't sold in the States and was never homologated for use on North American roads.

The boat has officially sailed for muscle car fans, V8-lovers, or loyal Mopar followers who didn't (or couldn't) get a last-gen Dodge Challenger or Charger when they were new. Dodge must meet emissions and economic regulations. Part of the solution was to eliminate legacy models like the Challenger. For the same reason, the Hemi V8 is all but dead; it survives today in Ram's heavier-duty range or Dodge's Durango, which is in its last year.

There's no doubt that a new Lexus GX is a feature-full, capable, and luxurious choice in today's world of new SUVs. Some may bulk at the price of a GX - from $64,000 - or the fact that there's no longer a V8 engine offered. A lightly-used, five-year-old example provides the benefits of the eight-cylinder Lexus GX 460 along with the second-generation's 2020 facelift that gave the mid-sized SUV sharper styling than previous years.

Chevrolet's V8 engine is on the precipice of extinction, seven decades since the first eight-cylinder small blocks went on sale - way back in 1955. Chevy's small blocks have powered countless vehicles worldwide, including many iconic muscle cars and sports cars, thanks to the wide range of versions that were built. Engines from the first generation of small blocks were more basic by today's standards, but even the LS-family from the end of the 90s still used pushrod designs.

When it's time to find a sports utility vehicle that can really do it all, there are a plethora of options available. Many automakers offer SUVs with a generous options list, punchy engines, luxury, and all at varying price levels. Usually, there's some kind of compromise - such as budget. Since this exercise is a hypothetical one, our budget is irrelevant.
