The Washington Nationals avoided what could have been the longest road trip ever measured, not in miles but in despair, by beating Colorado in extra innings Thursday afternoon. But dropping six of seven games to a pair of last place teams means something. And while they did not get swept by the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, the 22 runs allowed over three games tempers enthusiasm as the California road trip continues.

That loud thud you heard Sunday in D.C. was the Washington Nationals being swept at home by the last-place Miami Marlins. The losing streak has now reached eight, and the Nats have been blown out and lost one-run games, outscored (an 11-9 slugfest with Miami), and shut down (blanked by the Mets’ David Peterson, now less). The Nationals blew late leads against the Mets while seeing a late rally in New York come up short.

The Washington Nationals (30-35) dropped consecutive home series to the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers, with the bats producing just 10 runs over the six games. It’s only one week and two series, but after ranking ninth in May with 133 runs scored, the Nats have plated a MLB-low 11 runs in June. Thankfully, the club got a pair of pitching gems from two of their starters (more below), but one thought they would be trending in the other direction at the plate.

The Washington Nationals may have begun June with a 3-1 loss at Arizona, but the club finished a 15-12 May with consecutive offensive extravaganzas. The team scored nine runs in its last two games against Seattle, and then plated nine and 11 in its first two games at Arizona. And even though the offense ran dry Sunday, the Nats have moved into third place in the NL East. And even though they’re 28-31, we’ll be the king of wishful thinking.

The Washington Nationals have one of the youngest rosters in baseball. But this past week, they got younger not once, but twice. Prime prospect Robert Hassell III made his major league debut two months after putting the team on notice as a spring training sensation (Hassell posted a team-high 17 hits while batting .370 over 21 exhibitions) and went 2-5 with two runs scored.
