When I read about the to change the limited Week Zero schedule to the opening week of the college football season for everybody, my first thought was it would kill one of the few advantages Hawaii has to offset many inherent disadvantages. One of the worst is being 2, 500 miles away from the nearest potential opponents, and the one-week head start on getting the season going helped mitigate that.

It was OK for Matt Elliott to answer a couple of questions with “I don’t know” or “I haven’t started yet,” as he did Monday when he was confirmed as the University of Hawaii’s new athletic director. Of course, that depends on the specific questions. And in less than two weeks, non-answer answers will be far less acceptable.

The Los Angeles Rams, Hollman Lockers and design firm Forty Nine Degrees have teammed up to refurbish the boys and girls locker rooms at Lahainaluna High School. “After everything they’ve been through (with the wildfires of 2023), these student athletes deserve the best, and we’re proud to donate the lockers to this worthy community,” said Travis Hollman, CEO of Hollman Lockers, in a press release. Lahainaluna football coach Dean Rickard expressed gratitude for the locker rooms.

For the Aloy brothers of Wailuku, this is the second trip to Omaha, Neb., and the Men’s College World Series. The first was six years ago, when Wehiwa and Kuhio were still kids at Baldwin High.
