The president of the United States does not normally tweet, as he did last week, about football fans fighting in a European city. But as reactions to the violence in Amsterdam have shown, this was no ordinary outburst of football hooliganism, but another polarising moment in the debate about antisemitism. The trouble in Amsterdam after the Europa League game between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv was not even a traditional fight between rival football fans.

There has been much said and written about the violence in Amsterdam before and after the football match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax this week, and it’s been interesting, if rather odd, to watch my two worlds of football and antisemitism come together. I’ve been a match-going Man United fan all my life - I’m even writing this on the train to today’s game - which means I’ve seen a lot of football violence, thuggery and generally bad behaviour over the decades.

Yesterday there were two marches in central London, part of the never-ending stream of political demonstrations in our capital city. One, the ‘Uniting the Kingdom’ demonstration, was a far right march called by Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (better known as Tommy Robinson). The other was a Stand Up To Racism counter-protest against Robinson and his followers.
