PACIFIC BEACH – For the third consecutive year, the Pacific Beach Town Council and the Ocean Park Inn are teaming up to raise $20,000 for ocean safety and awareness. Now through July 4, all money from the joint fundraiser will go toward installing new rip-current warning signs in Pacific Beach. These critical signs will alert beachgoers to dangerous currents, helping to prevent accidents, save lives, and assist lifeguards. San Diego Lifeguard Chief James Gartland was appreciative of the effort.

SAN DIEGO – With beach fire rings about to fall to the city’s budget ax, the county stepped in to provide a $135,000 grant to fund their maintenance for the next fiscal year. The county’s offer came in response to San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria’s proposed budget, which called for removing fire rings to help trim the city’s projected $258 million budget shortfall.

SAN DIEGO – On June 16, the San Diego City Council voted 5-4 to amend the controversial Accessory Dwelling Unit Bonus Program. The program attempts to create more affordable housing without over-development, but residents we heard from via email and social media were not sure the benefits outweighed the disadvantages. We asked the people if they agreed/disagreed with the ADU amendments, whether those amendments went far enough – or too far – in reining in the ADU proliferation.

The San Diego City Council voted 5-4 late Monday night to amend the controversial Bonus Accessory Dwelling Unit program. The council majority agreed with public concerns that the Bonus ADU Program was allowing over densification and exploitation from some developers compromising the character of single-family neighborhoods. Dissenting votes were cast by council members Stephen Whitburn of District 3, Kent Lee of District 6, Vivian Moreno of District 8 and Sean Elo-Rivera of District 9.
Midway District homeless shelter to close in June

SAN DIEGO – The 150-bed homeless shelter on Rosecrans Street in the Midway District is scheduled to close on June 30, with funding for it only available until then. Opened in 2022, the Rosecrans facility located on county-owned land provides services to individuals with mental and behavioral health conditions.

The long-promised H Barracks site has arrived. A 190-space Safe Parking Program site was recently opened by the city of San Diego at H Barracks, offering vehicle dwellers services to help them avert homelessness. The Safe Parking Program provides individuals, seniors, and families a secure place to stay while accessing services and pursuing housing. Sites include restrooms, mental health services, and job training, and participants work with case managers to create individual housing goals.

Yoga is Baack at the beach and shoreline parks

It’s back to the beach and shoreline parks for yoga classes, as a federal appeals court recently struck down the city of San Diego’s ban on free yoga taught in public outdoor spaces. In a decision handed down on June 4, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals found that teaching yoga is protected speech under the First Amendment. The ruling reversed a lower court’s decision upholding the city’s ordinance banning group yoga and fitness classes in public shoreline areas without a permit.
New Point Loma mural celebrates Portuguese culture

POINT LOMA – An opening reception and unveiling were recently held for a new mural celebrating Portuguese culture by artist Hanna Daly and commissioned by the Point Loma Association. PLA partnered with business member Glen Schmidt to create a vibrant new floral mural on the side of the Schmidt Design Building at 1310 Rosecrans Street.
