In Hazleton Area's 5-3 victory over Wyoming Valley West at chilly Schiavo Field on Wednesday, the Cougars scored the go-ahead run and an insurance tally without one batted ball leaving the infield. Instead, Hazleton Area relied on a couple of well-placed bunts, two booted balls and one botched throw to eke out their second straight win since losing to Pittston Area on April 3.

    MMI Prep sophomore tennis player Maximus (Max) Bleiler breezed to victory in all three of his singles matches to raise his season record to 10-0, with each of his 10 wins coming in straight sets. He has not lost more than two games in a set this season as the Preppers’ No. 2 singles player behind his older brother, Xavier. The Bleilers are two big reasons why MMI started the week 9-1 and in prime position for a high seed in the upcoming District 2 Class AA team tournament.

    Fred Corrado and AJ Collevechio combined on a three-hitter as visiting Hazleton Area blanked Berwick, 12-0, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 baseball game on Monday. Dom Marino went 3-for-3 with a triple, two singles, two runs scored and three RBI to pace the Cougars’ offense. Bryant Diaz singled and drove in two runs; Ryan Welch, Nick Ledger and Shea Higgins each singled home a run; and Mikey Pecora chipped in a base hit before the 10-run rule ended the after five innings.

All three captured division, league or district championships and made deep state playoff runs. All featured excellent players at every position and superb coaching.
