CENTER VALLEY — From the third through seventh innings of their PIAA Class 6A baseball quarterfinal Thursday, Hazleton Area outscored and out-hit North Penn by considerable margins. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they had to play the first two innings. The Knights blended timely hitting with Hazleton Area’s uncharacteristically sloppy defense in those frames to build a 9-1 lead, which was more than enough of a buffer to fend off a relentless comeback bid by the Cougars.

CENTER VALLEY — As good as Lorenzo Hernandez was Thursday, Pope John Paul II’s Tyler Tindall was even better. MMI Prep junior baseball player Adam Frask hit for the cycle — in only five innings — in the Preppers’ 12-0 win over Susquehanna in the District 2 Class A championship game. He led off the game with an inside-the-park home run, doubled in the top of the third inning, hit a single in the fourth and drove a triple to the gap in right-centerfield in the fifth. He also stole home following his triple for MMI’s 12th and final run and made an fine over-the-shoulder catch to end the game.

HAZLE TWP. — In a game largely lacking power, Bryant Diaz found the perfect time to flip the switch. The senior third baseman’s walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Hazleton Area to a stirring 4-1 win over defending PIAA Class 6A champion Hempfield in the opening round of the state tournament, Monday, at Schiavo Field.
