Nonetheless, she has still decided to drop down to three days a week so she can develop her own business podcast and consultancy – all while juggling life as a working mother. Why? One word: growth. “I’d be a little hypocritical if I was telling my children to reach for the stars and not actually doing it myself,” says Gem, whose main role is head of communications, business and planning for University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

    People really value mentorship. That’s a key lesson from our conversations with Chartered Managers over recent months. In February, we met Louisa Dallinger CMgr FCMI, business development and practice manager at Reginald O’Neill Dental Care in Billericay, Essex. She told us how she used her knowledge and experience as a qualified dental nurse to mentor a colleague who was returning to education to qualify in dental sedation training. The colleague passed with flying colours.

In 2008, Chris Clayton CMgr FCMI began working as a salesperson at Hilti, the global power tool manufacturer. He moved through a variety of leadership roles there, but eventually felt his career ambitions butt up against a brick wall.
