By Dave WorkmanEditor-in-ChiefEmboldened by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision last week to not grant review of a lawsuit challenging a ban on so-called “assault weapons” in Maryland, the Rhode Island House of Representatives voted 43-28 to enact a similar ban in the Plantation State. According to GoLocalProv.com, the legislation now moves to the state Senate. The vote was hailed as a victory by the anti-gun Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence.

Not Like Television Challenging a rotten gun control statute in court is not something which happens between the opening theme music and closing credits. First, the group(s) behind such legal actions must find plaintiffs with “standing.” That is, it must be demonstrated the law being challenged causes them some legal harm. Plaintiffs are therefore vetted to establish they have a solid case, and there is nothing in their background which could derail the case in the middle of the trial.

WPR is reporting that sponsors of the legislation “hope to prevent gun violence, which typically spikes during the summer months.”However, there is no evidence any of their suggestions will prevent any violent crime.
