By Steve Rose and Motorbike Coach Mark McVeigh, BikeSocial’s riding Coach. I’ve spent a lot of the last seven months watching my 16-month-old granddaughter learning to walk. It’s been fascinating to see the transition between rolling over, sitting up, shuffling, standing while holding-on, tottering around and lurching into a stumble and fall. The ‘arms-out, Frankenstein shuffle’ was getting close to a walk and now, finally, something resembling a proper stroll.

If he target fixates on one of those chevron signs, that’s what he’ll hit Ask the Expert. But who is the expert? Mike Abbott is this month’s instructor. He’s an ex-engineer, successful racer and hugely qualified trainer. He runs the British Superbike School, which has courses at tracks around the country.

I last rode the B6451 six years ago on a KTM 1290 but I can still remember every detail of every corner. So why do I still mess up all those corners? What do you think about when riding a motorcycle? Close your eyes and replay a mental blast down your favourite road. What are you seeing? I can visualise the geography, the lines, the road surfaces, even the smells of hundreds of different routes all over the UK and beyond.

“You’re in a Bus Lane”, shouted a rider who’d pulled alongside me in Manchester. And I was. Or was I? There was indeed a solid white line painted down the road with the words ‘BUS LANE’ in front of me, and I’d passed the blue sign that had only the depiction of a bus, a bicycle and the word ‘taxi’ to the left of the white line in the sign… There wasn’t a picture of a motorcycle. But along with a warning of ‘Bus Lane Cameras’, there were the words Mon-Fri 7-10am 4-7pm.

Have you ever pulled in for petrol to hear a muffled voice coming from the canopy as you try vainly to obtain fuel from a frustratingly silent pump? Cue puzzled looks from you towards the cashier while the loudspeaker continues its muffled tones; ‘Me?’ you ask, pointing at your chest. Then the penny drops… the reason you can’t really hear them is a combination of a poor quality Tannoy system and surprise, you’ve got a helmet on.

BikeSocial Publisher since January 2017. How good was your riding today? How do you know? Who’s the judge of your day-to-day skills on a bike? Oh, it’s you. That’s handy. Imagine if all assessments were that easy. ‘How good are you at cooking Mr Rose?’ ‘Well, I’m brilliant as it happens, thank you for asking.’‘How good are you in bed lover-boy?’ ‘The best…Grr’Etc. Leaving that image behind, the point is that most of us never have our riding assessed after passing our tests.

The flight is short and almost always eventful (small planes, often with propellors, lots of wind and rain blowing sideways on arrival) and you can usually book seats quite late (compared to the ferries anyway). But…being on the IoM without a motorcycle is like going to work on your first day without your trousers.
