BERLIN, GERMANY — Berlin residents have shown a path out of our global housing crisis via the Deutsche Wohnen & Co. Enteignen (DWE) movement — a mass civil society campaign to socialize tens of thousands of units of private housing stock owned by the most speculative and egregious landlords. However, the German government, much like our Minnesotan and national institutions, has failed to implement the voters’ mandate.

If you live in Saint Paul like me, you may be familiar with the powerful rent stabilization law we passed in November 2021. Minneapolis and Saint Paul voters said “YES” to two referendums on rent stabilization, winning a victory for housing-over-profit, despite $4 million dollars spent by landlord and property developer groups to prevent us from having stable rent. Saint Paulites overwhelmingly see the need to house everyone. We all see the encampments. We know the best healthcare is housing.

My wife and I recently returned from a magical two weeks in Belgium, the Netherlands and Greece. In some ways, it’s devastating to return to our car-bound home after two weeks in urban and rural-urban paradise. I am consistently struck by how gorgeous, livable and intertwined with nature and agriculture both cities and country towns are in the places I visited.
