It was an older crowd than Mikel Jollett is used to. Jollett, 50, leads the indie rock band Airborne Toxic Event. Most of the people at the Hughes Community Center were well into their Medicare years. Jollett was speaking, not performing, on March 8 in support of his acclaimed memoir "Hollywood Park." The Friends of the Claremont Library had chosen the 2022 book, about his abusive upbringing, part of it in the Synanon cult, for the city's community read.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — A massive wildfire swept through the mountains just north of Los Angeles, and a series of new blazes forced people to flee in San Diego County as Southern California braced for another round of dangerous winds. Within two hours, the Hughes Fire in Los Angeles County charred more than 12 square miles of trees and brush, sending up plumes of dark smoke near Lake Castaic Wednesday.

PETERBOROUGH — Local residents spent part of Saturday learning how to stay warmer this winter and save money doing so. A total of $700,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy to go toward cash rebates and upgrading energy efficiency in homes is available through the Peterborough Renewable Energy Project and HeatSmart+, the incentive program funded by the Department of Energy. The program was rolled out at Peterborough’s Town House and will also be presented in Harrisville this Saturday, Jan. 25.
