The Environment Select Committee issued its report on the Fast-track Approvals Bill on 18 October 2024 (the Report). The purpose of the Fast-track Approvals Bill (the Bill) is to facilitate the delivery of infrastructure and development projects with significant regional or national benefits. Notably this legislation is proposed to be more enabling for development and broader in scope than previous fast-track legislation.

The purpose of the Fast-track Approvals Bill (the Bill) is to provide a streamlined 'one stop shop' decision-making process to facilitate the delivery of infrastructure and development projects with significant regional or national benefits. The Bill was introduced by the Government to Parliament in March 2024.

The Government has taken its first step towards implementing new climate-adaptation legislation, by announcing that the Finance and Expenditure Committee will undertake an inquiry into how New Zealand should adapt and respond to the effects of climate change. Earlier this month, and in a display of political unity, Parliament passed a unanimous motion establishing the inquiry, which is intended to support the development of policy and legislation to address climate adaptation (see here).
