A single peripheral fenestration can significantly reduce scleral lens-induced peripheral corneal swelling, which may be beneficial for susceptible post-surgical corneas. Future research is required to understand the mechanism underlying enhanced localised oxygen supply with a fenestration, such as enhanced tear exchange or passive oxygen diffusion.
