Nadia Odunayo never planned to take on the mighty global juggernaut that is Amazon, but for many book lovers, she has become the hero they didn’t know they needed. For 18 years, bibliophiles have been able to catalogue their reading, leave reviews and star ratings, and get recommendations for their next read on Goodreads, which was set up by two Stanford University alumni from California. In 2013, Goodreads’ founders sold it to Amazon, and the already hugely popular site skyrocketed.

During February, we acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices Black Americans have made throughout our nation’s history. Brenau has evolved throughout our 146-year history, and today a third of our student population identifies as Black. I credit the courage and resilience of Brenau’s first four Black students – Michelle Gray Haywood, Lois Green Harris, Belinda Harrison Sims, and Natalie Roberts – for paving the way for today’s generation of Black students at Brenau.

The industry in question is the world of TV and film, which is not an insubstantial sector: according to the latest British Film Institute figures, it’s collectively worth £12.6bn to the UK economy.

With the last day of classes on Nov. 26 and Finals Week complete, we have reached the end of the fall semester. On Friday, Dec. 13, the Brenau community will come together to honor our fall graduates in a celebratory commencement ceremony. I like to think of the commencement ceremony as both an ending and a beginning. At Brenau, we challenge students to lead extraordinary lives of personal and professional fulfillment.
