A notorious prison is having an emergency upgrade after a watchdog found it was plagued by drugs, violence and vermin. HMP Manchester, formerly known as Strangeways, is getting extra staff and ‘bolstered security measures’, including netting to stop drugs being flown into the jail by drone. New deals to crack down on migrant smugglers will be signed with three Balkan countries tomorrow, Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed. The Prime Minister will finalise agreements for closer co-operation with Serbia, North Macedonia and Kosovo - which all lie on key trafficking routes to Britain and western Europe. A No10 spokesman said the deals would ‘increase intelligence sharing, expertise and co-operation’ in a bid to smash organised crime gangs behind the small boats crisis.
