Marco Pantani never called cocaine by its proper name. To him, it was just la roba —the stuff — and in the final month of his life, he spent €20,000 on the drug. Bruised and alone in a hotel room in the Italian coastal city of Rimini, the door barricaded by a pile of furniture, he sniffed it and he ate it and he rubbed it into his gums. When he died, aged 34, at 5pm on February 14, 2004, his body contained six times the lethal dose of cocaine.
