The force is finally with Star Wars fans long frustrated by director George’s Lucas’s alterations to the iconic space opera, with a rare screening of the original cut of the film in London this summer. The 1977 theatrical version of the film, in which Han Solo shot first and Jabba the Hutt was only mentioned by name, will be shown twice on the opening night of the British Film Institute’s Film on Film festival on 12 June.

The risk of suicide and self-harm for people who identify as gay or lesbian, bisexual or another sexual orientation (LGB+) is more than twice as high as for their heterosexual peers, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The ONS found that the risk of suicide among people aged 16 and over identifying as LGB+ in England and Wales was about 2.2 times higher than among heterosexuals, while the risk of intentional self-harm was 2.5 times higher.

Thousands of patients or their loved ones have sought a second opinion about their NHS care as result of hospitals adopting Martha’s rule, MPs have heard. This includes more than 100 patients taken to intensive care “or equivalent” since the patient safety procedure was introduced in many parts of the NHS in England last April, the Commons health and social care committee heard on Wednesday.

Cooking on a gas hob can create higher levels of indoor air pollution than found on one of the UK’s busiest roads, a study has found. The research by Which? compared levels of two of the most damaging air pollutants – nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) – in the homes of four people with gas hobs, one person with an induction hob and on Marylebone Road in central London.
