    Illinois police officers killed in the line of duty during 2024 were honored during a special ceremony in Springfield on Thursday, and an Alton police dog that died last year was among them. Odin, an Alton Police Department canine, was killed on Aug. 22, 2024. Odin and his handler, Officer Allen Averbeck, were both shot while exchanging gunfire with a suspect near the intersection of E. Sixth Street and Liberty Street in Alton.

    It was more than just a trim for many participants in East Alton on Saturday as supporters turned out for “Brave the Shave for Rory Faye,” a fundraiser at Don’s No Man’s Land to help a 3-year-old cancer patient and her family during their ongoing chemotherapy ordeal. The head-shaving event meant that all who participated left with less locks than when they arrived.
