    The 2024 AACR (American Association of Cancer Research) Philadelphia marathon (26.2 miles) had noteworthy occurrences. The first woman finisher, Katie Florio who clocked 2 hours 32 minutes 42 seconds (2:32:42) won more than just the first-place cash prize of $10,000. She went home with an additional thousand dollars for being the first Philadelphia woman to finish. Her winnings that day totaled $11,000.

    Certain individuals’ disabilities are quite visible. One who has to use a wheelchair, one who is missing a limb, or who one who has Down Syndrome have visible disabilities unequivocally. There are other disabilities that are invisible. Worse, some people associated with persons who have the invisible disability might not understand nor believe that he/she/they are disabled. This can lead to doubters being unsupportive.

    Seven miles outside of Philadelphia lies the borough of Narberth, Pa. Narberth, which has been a borough since 1895, is known for having small independent businesses and some family owned for several generations. But in 2019, a noteworthy addition was added: Brooke Goodspeed established the GET Cafe, where over 50 people with disabilities work. Their ages range from 16 to 60. Goodspeed emphasized that launching GET did not happen over-night. “It took four years,” said Goodspeed, 45.
