A recent commentary in The Star really highlighted the difference in the candidates running for president. Kamala Harris was noted to be "not the sharpest tool in the shed" and focused on her inability to diagram sentences. If this doesn't turn one red and support Trump, I do not know what will! The brilliance of the ex-president's "weave" is evident every day, never more so than during the debate against Vice President Harris.

The recent lie about the Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, was reprehensible. J.D. Vance essentially admitting it was a lie by saying he has no problem "creating" a story if it gets the media to cover the issue says a lot about the integrity of the man. The harm that he and Donald Trump caused to that city meant nothing to them. Just another sound bite.

Writing this commentary to The Star makes me think of a line in the old "Get Smart" show, where Maxwell Smart is in court and says something like, "Your honor, for the last 30 minutes we have watched the prosecuting attorney make a complete a-- out of himself. Now its my turn." So here goes. There are many things I do not understand, being an old retired guy living up in the country.

AbstractDecadal changes in abundance of marine organisms along the Australian coastline were reported in a recent Nature paper by Edgar et al. (2023). We reexamine the data used in that paper, and show that the conclusion of a 59% decline in weedy seadragons (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) cannot be justified based on these data. The data are too sparse, especially for the final survey years of 2020 and 2021, and it is this sparsity in combination with particular modelling choices made by Edgar et al.
