He beat them. Now, he'll join them. Malachi Smith, a three-year starter at Dayton, has committed to the UConn men's basketball team out of the transfer portal. Smith, a 6-foot guard, averaged 10.4 points and a team-best 5.3 assists per game last season for the Flyers. The Bronx native helped Dayton hand UConn its biggest blowout loss of last season, 85-67 in the Huskies' final game of the Maui Invitational on Nov. 27.

When a team isn't hitting, like the Boston Red Sox over the first week of the season, the tendency for fans, media and, too often, the front office is to scapegoat the hitting coach. But when that team gets hot, like the Red Sox did in their second week of the season? The hitting coach rarely gets much credit, at least publicly.
