Everyone is safe after a house fire in Callander yesterday, but unfortunately, the home is a total loss. Todd Daley, the Chief of Callander’s Fire and Emergency Services, explained, “We’re attributing the cause to unattended cooking.” He added, “One of the most significant causes of residential structure fires is unattended cooking.”He said the call came in around 5 p.m. last evening for a structure fire in the South Shore area of the municipality.

In March, council received a staff report suggesting non-budgeted expenditures fall between $2,500 to $25,000. The later price split council, as three members thought that was too high. A non-budgeted expense is most often an unforeseen cost, such a breakdown within the municipal fleet. The mayor provided another example, a broken water pipe. West Nipissing has proclaimed April 27 to May 3 as Volunteer Appreciation Week. The motion was put to council from Councillor Kaitlynn Nicol and seconded by Councillor Daniel Gagné. Council agreed unanimously to accept the suggestion. Nicol’s proclamation emphasized the importance of recognizing residents who help make West Nipissing a better place.

The Ministry of Education plans to convert McDougall Public School in Parry Sound into a site for French-language school board programming. This comes after the Near North District School Board (NNDSB) recently voted to keep the school open – as an English language elementary school. As of May 1, West Nipissing’s mayor will be granted 'strong mayor' powers — a set of expanded authorities provided by the Ontario government to help expedite municipal decision-making. On April 9, the Ontario government announced that strong mayor powers, which give greater authority to municipal leaders, will be granted to an additional 169 municipalities.
