On May 16, 2023, George Walker did something he feared he would never do again — walk out of jail a free man. For 35 years, the Detroit native was in the Michigan prison system, serving a life term without the possibility of parole for participating in a deadly shootout that occurred when he was 18. The Michigan Supreme Court ruled in 2022 that giving an 18-year-old an automatic life sentence without parole was a cruel punishment that violated the state constitution.
