Starting with “The Grandmaster of Kung Fu” (2019), “Tai Chi Master” (2022) and “Desperado” (2024) starring Danny Chan. His latest online project, “Striking Rescue”, streaming on Youku, even comes with a bigger drawcard, featuring the Muay Thai warrior himself, Tony Jaa in the lead. Interestingly, this movie managed to get a cinema release in the US and Thailand.

    Shanghai born Hua Shan, a graduate of the Shanghai Film Institute, joined Shaw Brothers Studio back in 1963 as an assistant cinematographer. After promoted, he worked on films like “Winged Tiger”, “The Wandering Swordsman”, “The Chinese Boxer” and “The 14 Amazons” as their cinematographer. However, his directorial debut for Shaw was “The Super Inframan” (1975) starring Danny Lee.

    South Korean action comedy “Veteran”, written and directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, came out in 2015. It was a huge success which grossed over US$92M and became the all-time 5th highest-grossing film in the local cinema history. A sequel with Ryoo directing, Hwang Jung-min and Oh Dal-su reprising their roles was soon in the works, but it only hit the screens titled “I, The Executioner” nine years later.

The film, “A Better Tomorrow” also made its star Chow Yun Fat an overnight success and launched him into the big league of the Asian film industry. Furthermore it also gave co-star, a Shaw Brothers veteran, Ti Lung‘s career a much welcoming boost. After the huge success of its predecessor, a sequel with the same cast returning soon hit the big screens.
