In what’s been labelled another win for the southern suburbs at Wollongong Council’s Monday night meeting, the fate of the beloved Lake Heights Moreton Bay Fig Tree appears to have been secured. A proposed rezoning of two blocks of land where it stands at 6-8 Grand View Parade from R2 Residential to RE1 Public Recreation in Item 4, was voted to be put on exhibition. This paves the way for the land to be transferred to council ownership from the state government for use as a park.

Shellharbour City Council has backed a plan to help improve how e-bikes and e-scooters are used in the city. At this week’s Council meeting, a report was presented outlining ways to support safer riding, including better signage, future path upgrades, and a public education campaign. Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer, said more people were using e-transport to get around, and Council wanted to ensure they could do so safely.

The Australian Tax Office is providing more support for new small business owners in the Illawarra. The ATO said around 50 percent of businesses fail in the first three years, often because they don’t get their tax obligations right. Lake Illawarra Police have begun investigations after a man was hit and killed by a car in Primbee. About 6pm Tuesday 27 May 2025, emergency services were called to the intersection of Windang Road and Bakers Lane Primbee, NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a man, believed to be aged in his 70’s, however he died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, a 57-year-old woman was not injured, and was taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory testing.

NSW is rapidly rolling out more EV chargers, with the Minns Labor Government investing another $16.1 million to install 246 fast and ultra-fast EV chargers across the state. This latest round of grant funding is boosted by private investment that will see a total of $41.2 million to roll-out the new charging ports, which will all be powered by renewable energy.
