Writer David Clensy set off on a long walk – seeking to tackle the 93 miles of Wiltshire’s White Horse Trail, joined in the adventure by his wide-eyed 10-year-old son, Charlie. Walking the White Horses, a work of narrative non-fiction, follows their progress as they make their way from horse to horse. The book takes the reader on a lyrical meander through the natural wonders of southern England’s chalk downland environment, its people, heritage and wildlife.

Myfavorite read in 2024…Long Island by Colm Tóibín, published in 2024, is a compelling sequel to his acclaimed novel Brooklyn. Set over two decades after Eilis Lacey's initial journey to America, the story delves into her return to Ireland amidst personal turmoil. Eilis, now in her forties and living in Long Island with her husband Tony and their teenage children, faces a crisis when she learns of Tony's infidelity and the impending birth of his child with another woman.

Shepherd is reader supported. When you buy books, we may earn an affiliate commission. Myfavorite read in 2023…The book deals movingly with the issues around historic child sex abuse in the Catholic church in Ireland. Barry said his period as Laureate for Irish Fiction (2019–2021) stopped him from “thinking about himself” as a writer and gave him a sense of “a public role,” which ultimately opened the door to him taking on this enormously challenging subject matter.

I was captivated by Julian Barnes’ treatment of memory and time in this novel, which tells the story of Tony Webster and his group of school friends, whose relationships fracture and strain as life and death leave their marks on their lives. In his retirement, Webster's own memories of his youth prove unreliable.

Great to see Walking the White Horses back at the top of Amazon’s Countryside books chart. The sunshine must be turning people’s minds back to dusting down their walking boots (if only vicariously!) 😊 https://t.co/gYr7wWLAcK
