On Dec. 3, 2024, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) released a proposed rule that would treat data brokers as credit reporting agencies, subjecting them to requirements under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The rulemaking would also limit the sale and transfer of credit header data, which contains consumer identifiers, including names, dates of birth and addresses.

On May 30, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) released a Request for Information (RFI) regarding mortgage closing costs. The seven-page RFI provided nine questions about the impact of closing costs, and how they relate to borrowers and the mortgage market. Comments on the RFI are due by Aug. 2. The RFI follows CFPB’s March blog post on housing “junk fees,” detailing that the bureau would seek public input regarding mortgage closing costs.

On April 17, the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) released General License (GL) 44A, requiring the wind down of business transactions with Venezuela’s state-owned energy company Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PdVSA). The move effectively allowed General License 44 (GL44) to expire and obligates companies engaged with PdVSA to wind down previously authorized operations in Venezuela by 12:01 a.m. ET on May 31, 2024.
