The self-immolation of twenty-five-year-old active-duty U.S. airman Aaron Bushnell at the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C., earlier this week was an extreme act of protest against the war in Gaza—a desperate plea to “free Palestine,” as he screamed while flames engulfed his body. Whatever was in Bushnell’s mind, he clearly hoped to compel us to act to end the bloodshed.
