    Virginia Tech couldn’t hang with Virginia in the second half of Thursday’s Commonwealth Clash in Cassell Coliseum, a 73-65 loss for the Hokies. The rivals were tied at 35 at halftime before the Cavaliers outscored the Hokies 27-12 in the third quarter, the ultimate difference in the game. Tech was better in the fourth quarter (18-11) but couldn’t climb out of its 18-point hole. “I thought Virginia in that third quarter was the difference in the game,” Tech head coach Megan Duffy said.

    It’s a jam-packed few days for Hokies women’s basketball, which hosts in-state rival Virginia on Thursday and then Louisville on Sunday for Liz Kitley night. Virginia Tech is honoring Kitley, the greatest player in program history, by retiring her iconic No. 33 jersey. Her school records include games started (151), minutes played (4,935), points (2,709), double-figure games (125), double-doubles (76), field goals made (1,109), field goal percentage (55.2%), rebounds (1,506) and blocks (331).

    The Hokies seemed down and out a handful of times in Wednesday night’s game against NC State, but they found a way to gut out a 79-76 win. Virginia Tech (8-9, 3-3 ACC) trailed the Wolfpack (9-8, 2-4) by as many as 15 points, and it was a 12-point game with 6:38 remaining, but Tech closed the game on a 19-4 run, capped off by Ben Burnham stealing NC State’s last-ditch effort and tomahawking it home.
