YORBA LINDA — Jordan Laws scored a game-high 22 points and collected 13 rebounds as the Yorba Linda boys basketball team took sole possession of first place in the Freeway League with a 50-45 win over El Dorado on Friday at Yorba Linda High. Mustangs coach Jason Pietsch acknowledged his team's recent struggles with the Golden Hawks and was pleased to get a crucial league victory, especially after blowing a huge lead in their last meeting with El Dorado.

IRVINE — The Irvine boys basketball team continued its torrid start to the season by picking up another victory on Friday night, 60-42 over Laguna Hills at Irvine High. Senior forward Cooper Stearns led the Vaqueros (11-2) with a game-high 24 points and 20 rebounds. "He's just solid, every game," Irvine coach Harry Meussner said of Stearns. "The biggest thing that I'm most proud of Cooper for is that he keeps his composure really well.

ANAHEIM — The El Dorado boys basketball team used a 12-0 run late in the fourth quarter to pull ahead and defeat Esperanza, 75-62, Tuesday night at Esperanza High in a nonleague game. Caleb Hendrix scored a team-high 17 points for the Golden Hawks (10-2), Brian Kee and Marcelo Gonzalez each had 15 points each while Noah Barker added 11 points. ExpandHendrix and Kee both came up clutch in the fourth quarter by each scoring eight points in the period.

ANAHEIM — The Mater Dei girls basketball team was eager to get back in the win column after suffering a tough loss at the hands of the top-ranked team in the state, Ontario Christian. The Monarchs (8-1), the top-ranked team in Orange County, found themselves trailing by eight points to second-ranked Fairmont Prep (7-3) in an early-season county showdown. But Mater Dei eventually settled in Tuesday and turned the early deficit into a 65-46 win over the Huskies at Fairmont Prep Academy.

GARDEN GROVE — The Tustin boys basketball team lost a 19-point, second-half lead but regrouped in the fourth quarter, and Brady Kong drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer to give the Tillers a 40-38 win over Sunny Hills in the semifinals of the Euclid Extravaganza on Friday night at Garden Grove High. "They're teenage, young men, they get a little complacent and they think it's going to be easy in the second half," Tustin coach Ringo Bossenmeyer said of his players.

TUSTIN — The Foothill football team's last ride with coach Doug Case at the helm rolls on. Next stop: the CIF-SS semifinals. Gino Marchetti threw three touchdown passes to Nico Mancini and running back Nathan Gouvion added two scores as the Knights held on to beat Lakewood 38-35 in the CIF-SS Division 5 quarterfinals on Friday night at Tustin High. The Knights (7-5) advance to face Palos Verdes (7-5) in the semifinals, and they extended Case’s tenure at least one more week.

LOS ALAMITOS — After one half of play, the Los Alamitos football team led by two touchdowns, but that lead became a one-point deficit late in the fourth quarter. Griffins quarterback Alonzo Esparza found Tron Baker for a check-down pass that Baker took 42 yards to the end zone and Jerod Terry added an insurance score as Los Alamitos beat Leuzinger 36-22 on Friday night in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.
