IRONTON — Bond was set at $1 million Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court for a Lawrence County man charged with nine counts of rape and 11 counts of sexual battery. Michael S. Bishop, 39, of County Road 182, Kitts Hill, pleaded not guilty in the case. If convicted, he could spend life rest of his life in prison. In an unrelated case, Samuel Conley, 36, of Township Road 1021, Ironton, pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape and 10 counts of sexual battery.

IRONTON — Eight people were indicted on felony charges in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court earlier this week. The charges generally don’t end in prison sentences under Ohio law. An indictment is a formal charge made against a person by a grand jury. It does not establish guilt or innocence. IRONTON — A South Point man was indicted earlier this week on serious drug charges in Lawrence County Court of Common Pleas. Douglas W. Smith, 44, of County Road 120 South, was indicted on three counts of aggravated trafficking in drugs (meth), possession of meth, trafficking and possession of hashish, trafficking and possession of marijuana, having weapons while under disability (being a felon in possession of a firearm) and receiving proceeds of an offense subject to forfeiture proceedings.

IRONTON — A Kentucky man was sentenced to some 28 months in prison Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court for violating terms of his community control sanctions (probation). James D. Hayes, 42, of Sandy Hook, admitted violating terms of his probation before Judge Christen Finley. She sentenced him to the balance of his terms of probation. Hayes, however, could be eligible for early release from prison after serving six months there.
