The study highlights that tarumase gels up to 11 U/mL did not result in any increase in pain to the patient above baseline levels whether assessed shortly after administration or after having been left on the wound for 48–72 h. Surgical and mechanical wound debridement is a painful procedure and whilst this can be reduced by topical administration of local anaesthesia prior to debridement, this is not routinely performed due to the long wait times needed for onset of anaesthesia.

1 INTRODUCTION Unlike acute wounds, chronic or “hard-to-heal” wounds often contain a number of microbial, biochemical and/or cellular abnormalities that prevent or slow progression through to healing. Indeed, the most salient feature of chronic wounds is that they are stubbornly difficult to heal, stalling for months, or even years, enhancing disability and underpinning chronic healthcare challenges.
