We had some fun last week “playing pretend” and using our imagination to put ourselves in the life of another. I was hoping you might be willing to do it again. I think you’ll like it. You are a young boy growing up in Wexford, a Pittsburgh suburb. You’re inevitably wearing lots of black and gold and your family likely puts fries on everything (including their salad) because that’s what people there do.

A couple years ago, my wife began knitting. And when she takes an interest in something, she goes all in. She’s a perfectionist about learning a new craft, so in a short amount of time, she’s gotten pretty damn good. I can’t even pretend to know anything more than the most basic idea behind knitting, but somehow she makes incredibly complex garments with skill and precision.

Some of my favorite columns are the ones where I ask you to use your imagination. This is going to be one of those and will include both Sir Mix-A-Lot and a major plot twist. Let’s play pretend like we used to as a kid. In fact, let’s pretend you are a kid again. You are a seven-year-old little boy playing in the living room and you just overheard your mom tell a friend you’re adopted. I know I told you to become a child again and then I gave you trauma, but you need it for the story.

I had half of my column written. It had this whole breakdown about the term final four, the NCAA’s trademark of it and why those two words should provide excitement regardless of their context. I discussed how the NBA and the NHL were having their own versions of a ‘final four’ and detailed what that two word union implies to me as a potential spectator. How I can likely expect competitive games (love the plurality) demonstrating top tier talent, teamwork and tenacity.

Given how disappointing the UNC men’s basketball season has been, did NC State’s head coach just lose his job?
