ENDICOTT — With a state-qualifying mark already in the bag coming into Wednesday’s NYSPHSAA Section IV State Qualifier meet at Union-Endicott High School, all Tioga Central pole vaulter Gavin Albrecht had to do was participate. No matter how poorly or successfully the high school junior did in the appearance, just showing up to work was going to qualify him for a second-straight state championship appearance.

NEW TRIPOLI — Eight runs in the bottom of the third inning by Northwestern Lehigh was more than enough to take hold of Monday’s PIAA 4A first-round state playoff game and end Athens softball’s historic season. By the end, the Northern Tier League and first-time District IV champions were eliminated with an 11-0 result in five innings on the road. kAm“(6 5C@G6 5@H? 2?5 D2H 2 G6CJ 8@@5 E62>[” pE96?D 9625 4@249 qC:2?

BINGHAMTON — Early offense from Deposit-Hancock softball was enough to down Tioga Central 7-1 in Saturday afternoon’s NYSPHSAA Section IV, Class C Championship game in Greenlight Grand Slam Park. All seven runs from the Lady Eagles — who are in their first year in Class C after winning the state title in Class D four times in a row — came in the first two innings.

ATHENS — When Athens senior Mary Henry first began to wrestle at the beginning of her sophomore year of high school, the inexperience showed. “I remember my first Jarvis tournament (in Athens’ gym), I don’t think I got a single win,” she said. “Later in the year, I just saw a lot of improvement with myself with stamina and all my moves and everything.”kAmw6?CJ :>AC@G65 96C C64@C5 @G6C E96 4@FCD6 @7 96C E9C66 D62D@?D 2D 2? pE96?D HC6DE=6C[ ;F>A:?8 7C@> 2 c\`` C64@C5 E92E D@A9@>@C6 D62D@? WILLIAMSPORT — Having just given up the game’s first run to Central Columbia in the top of the fourth inning, the Athens softball team was feeling a little snake-bitten in the bottom half of Thursday’s PIAA District IV, Class 4A championship game. The Lady Wildcats, who earned their first two base runners of the game in the same frame with a single and a walk in the process, ripped three hard line drives that all just happened to find Central Columbia gloves for outs.
