    Summerland was founded in August, 1902 when Sir Thomas Shaughnessy and his company, the Summerland Syndicate, purchased George Barclay’s Trout Creek Ranch.     In the summer of 1924, Summerland experienced little rain. By September, water supply was a concern. The level of water in the Trout Creek reservoir was “somewhat alarming” according to Water Foreman Harry Tomlin. Trout Creek reservoir is a glacial lake and originally, groundwater was its only source of water. When Summerland was founded in 1902, additional water was diverted from Trout Creek to supplement the reservoir.
