In the early 2000s, selling two games at once became something of a trend. Blame it on Pokémon, whose Red and Blue sold approximately a bajillion copies. The only difference between the Red and Blue versionswas which Pokémon you got, and the mandate to “catch ‘em all” made grabbing both irresistible. It was also a period of technological shift, as the second generation of 3D consoles became the unquestioned top dogs. But Pokémonhad shown that the consoles no longer had to operate alone.

In Gunpei Yokoi’s life, one can read both the history of video games and that of post-WWII Japan. Yokoi was born in Osaka in 1941, just a few months before the Empire attacked Pearl Harbor. In the 1960s, after earning an electronics degree from a prestigious university, Yokoi got a job as a maintenance engineer on the assembly line for a toy and card company called Nintendo. Nintendo had been around since the 19th century, focused on hanafuda cards primarily used for gambling.
