This 1953 recording, in good, re-worked mono sound, still has much to recommend, but it remains somewhat problematic as well. The Marguerite of Victoria de Los Angeles is beautiful in its purity, and her voice is in peak condition–easily produced, girlish, free at the top. Nicolai Gedda’s Faust is a model of how the role is supposed to be sung, his phrasing always musical, the use of dynamics intelligent.

Scaling the Mahler Ninth Symphony’s immense instrumental forces and harrowing emotional extremes down to chamber-sized dimensions may sound downright crazy. Thanks to David Bernard and his Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, the concept’s strong points outweigh its limitations. It goes without saying that the ensemble’s small string aggregation cannot begin to match a full orchestra’s resources for requisite tonal heft and sustaining power at all dynamic levels.

This recording, live from the Vienna State Opera in 1955, was taped just weeks before virtually the same cast (there’s only one major difference) entered the studio and recorded it for Decca. The performances are remarkably similar: Karl Böhm, a master of this complex, beautiful score, presents it almost complete (there are, I believe, very small cuts here and there) and has assembled a superb, enthralled, and enthralling cast.

As a Strauss conductor, David Zinman’s interests lie more with making sense of the composer’s complex linear strands than reveling in his dazzling sonorities and dynamic extremes. In other words, Zinman’s a line guy, while Straussians like Kempe and Karajan are chord guys (Strauss is a chord guy disguised as a line guy). There’s much to savor over the course of these seven discs.

This opera has been referred to as Richard Strauss’ “bel canto” opera, but it’s impossible to figure out why. It requires a great dramatic soprano and tenor (as well as a high, chirpy soprano, good mezzo, and second tenor), but there are few melodies and those you can catch are brief; in addition, there are only a few moments where Strauss’ love for the female voice can be noticed.
