    We all know what saints look like, don’t we? After all, we see their images on holy cards and stained-glass windows all the time. They’re the ones who take vows of poverty and sleep on cold floors among the poor whom they serve. They’re the ones who risk their own health to live alongside lepers. They’re the ones who suffer and die heroically as martyrs for the faith. And they’re even the ones who … serve as the head of the faith formation department for their local diocese.

    Churchgoing wasn’t really a thing in the household where I spent my pre-adolescence. Watching classic movies, on the other hand, was a common ritual. That’s why, thanks to Spencer Tracy’s Oscar winning performance from 1938, even a religious illiterate such as myself had some passing knowledge of Father Edward J. Flanagan and the Boys Town he founded. (Photo above is from the movie.)Time passes, though, and 86-year-old movies about priests are rarely aired anymore.

    Spoiler alert! Works of art (which Villeneuve’s movies most certainly are) often have meanings their creators didn’t intend ... Recently on his HBO talk show, alleged comedian Bill Maher said the quiet part out loud while discussing his pro-choice stance on the topic of abortion. Of his pro-life opponents, Maher noted, “They think it’s murder, and it kind of is. I’m just okay with that. I am. I mean there’s eight billion people in the world. ‘I’m sorry, we won’t miss you.’ That’s my position on that.
