With recent polling results giving many MLAs in the Alberta NDP’s substantial Opposition caucus the jitters, the by-election next Monday in Edmonton-Ellerslie is shaping up to be a significant test for party Leader Naheed Nenshi. There will be two other by-elections on June 23. One is in Edmonton-Strathcona where Nenshi is expected finally to be elected with relative ease and gain a seat in the Legislature.

In a classic Friday afternoon bad-news dump, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party (UCP) announced a scheme to make seniors pay “the full costs” for restricted supplies of COVID-19 vaccines. When the UCP’s RFK-Jr.-inspired policy is implemented in mid-August, it will be easier to get ripped on legal marijuana in this province than it will be to find a life-saving shot of COVID vaccine. It will probably be cheaper, too.

Everybody who’s been paying attention to what Alberta Danielle Smith has been saying and doing for years understands that her government’s new policy of forcing Albertans to pay for COVID-19 immunization has precious little to do with saving the $135 million worth of unused doses she claims was “flushed down the drain last year.” Smith took to the airways Saturday to repeat and embellish that particular talking point about the policy on her bi-weekly CORUS Radio Your Province/Your Premier...
