I hope so because there’s lots to love about Vienna’s traditional white field blend, a mixture of different varieties, cultivated on the slopes that surround the city and harvested together. Gemischter Satz can sometimes be a little boozy for summer sipping but this new-wave wine, majority Grüner Veltliner, dials in at a picnic-friendly 11.5%.

Tasted on 27/03/2025 Tasted by David Kermode Mencía is one of Spain’s most exciting red grapes and this compelling wine comes from Monterrei, the youngest DO in Galicia, which lies inland at an altitude of around 500m. Fresh, vibrant, unoaked, there’s crunchy red fruit, lithe structure and a hint of something savoury on the finish. A great option for lovers of Pinot Noir or Gamay, this lends itself to a chill, so give it 20 minutes in the fridge and enjoy with pasta and ragu.

The Society’s first ever own-label Spätburgunder, aka Pinot Noir, is crafted by talented young winemaker Vincent Eymann from vines certified organic and biodynamic. The ripe ’22 vintage yields a delicious, pure and juicy style, with a real sense of energy and subtle smoky complexity, offering astounding value for Pfalz Pinot. Gently chilled, it’s a great option for bratwurst and I have just ordered a case myself.

Tasted on 27/03/2025 Tasted by David Kermode I rarely love rosé from anywhere other than Provence, so this fabulous Italian rosato, from a third generation family estate in Marche, central Italy, stopped me in my tracks. The nose entices with berries, cherries, blood orange and rose petals, leading into a festival of red fruit dancing around a spear of firm Italian acidity.

Tasted on 27/03/2025 Tasted by David Kermode White Bordeaux is criminally underrated, meaning the wines, combining the freshness of Sauvignon Blanc with the charming texture of Semillon, tend to be a hard sell. Here, the producer needed to move on some mature stock, so The Society bagged a bargain for its members. More than eight years of ageing have only served to improve this wine, which offers gentle evolution but retains plenty of freshness.

The salty, citrus nose offers beguiling restraint, hinting at the wine’s crisp, glacial sense of purity, precision and elegance. Gastronomic, this is a wine to pair with dressed crab for a summer supper.

Tasted on 27/03/2025 Tasted by David Kermode From the remote Citrusdal Mountains, 100 miles north of Cape Town, this elegant, textured wine is made by self-taught American winemaker Ginny Povall, who tends to bush vines planted in 1960. The nose offers pithy grapefruit and aromas of fynbos, South Africa’s native scrub. Plump, with delicious layers of complexity, there’s an ethereal quality and a satisfying salinity adds to the gastronomic versatility.
