The season came to an end for the Massaponax girls volleyball team Thursday night, but not without a serious fight. The Panthers lost the first two sets to visiting Independence in the Region 5D semifinals, but battled back to win the next two and send it to the deciding fifth set. Massaponax went down battling to the end, living out one of their team mantras one last time. Set scores were 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 23-25, 15-10.

Massaponax volleyball fought its way into the Commonwealth District tournament final with a straight-set win over Colonial Forge, 25-13, 25-15, 25-13, on Tuesday. The Panthers won the first two sets handily, but in the third set, the Eagles weren’t going down without a fight. Colonial Forge held a 23-18 lead late in the third, looking to extend the match one set further. However, the Panthers erased that deficit quickly, going on a massive run at the end of the set.

The Cougars had just beaten visiting James Monroe, 35-14, and he seemed as happy for this win as he had been for the other 149. “This isn’t about me. Louisa moved into first place in the Jefferson District on Friday night, scoring seven touchdowns on the way to a 52- 32win over Orange. Louisa, Orange and Fluvanna came into this week's games tied for first at 2-0.
