In 1974, a 35-year-old Harvard lecturer named Marty Peretz purchased The New Republic (TNR) with $380,000 of his wife’s inherited sewing machine fortune and commenced remaking the magazine in his image. Though he came up on the activist New Left in the 1960s, Peretz had since fallen out with many of his erstwhile comrades over Israel, particularly its rejection by Black radicals.
