Despite weeks of opinion polls predicting France’s far right would sweep to power in the legislative elections, Sunday’s second round of polling resulted in Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) and its allies being forced into third place by the New Popular Front alliance of leftwing and green parties, and Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Ensemble coalition. France will now have a hung parliament. David Lees looks at what ‘s happened.
