    Wellhead gas supply prices have pretty much trebled over the past decade, ever since Santos talked its consortium partners into building more LNG capacity than there was gas available to supply. As export prices were way higher than domestic prices this meant that all producers, particularly of course Santos, were incentivised to supply the export rather than the domestic market. That situation still exists today.

    My reading of the Victorian Draft Transmission Document 2025 suggests that Victoria doesn’t really want to do much more onshore development and prefers to have higher cost offshore wind, and the associated jobs, than to go through the work of building on the industry that they currently lead Australia in. Victoria, South Australia and the ACT have been the pinup states and territories for renewable energy in Australia’s main grid, the National Electricity Market (NEM).

    Even with a transmission cost equating to $35 a megawatt hour, the levellised cost of energy from onshore wind in the Riverina region is about 60% of offshore wind. And, I would argue, it’s less risky in its construction.
