    Goma — Rwandan-backed rebels marched into Democratic Republic of Congo’s largest eastern city, Goma, on Monday and troops from the East African neighbours exchanged fire over the border in the worst escalation of the long-running conflict for more than a decade. The rebel alliance, spearheaded by the ethnic Tutsi-led M23 militia, said it had captured the lakeside city of more than 1-million people, which lies on the border with Rwanda and was also briefly occupied by M23 in 2012.

    This year will be characterised by a veritable orgy of democracy in action. National elections are scheduled in 74 countries across the globe, including major population centres and key players in international affairs such as the US, India, Indonesia, the UK, the EU and SA. Is it not then ironic that common to so many of the countries participating in elections — the most important marker of democratic governance — is that the central issue at stake is the future of democracy itself?

    I recently heard great jazz at the Linder Auditorium, with the innovative Marcus Wyatt leading the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the ZAR Jazz Orchestra. A fortnight ago I went to a wonderful performance at the Market Theatre by SA musicians and singers of the music of little-heard early 20th century singer/composer Reuben T Caluza, co-arranged by the fiercely talented Philip Miller and Tshegofatso Moeng.

    12 September 2023 - 05:00 The Treasury’s recent presentation to parliament’s appropriation committee of the annual reports of our major state-owned enterprises (SOEs) paints a distressing, if not surprising, picture. Public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan’s angry instructions to the newly installed board of Transnet reveal that the corporation’s problems are rooted in poor governance practices. I’m convinced this is the case with respect to all SOEs.   ..
