The girls come from Lithuania, Afghanistan and Syria. They put a lot of thought and effort into the recommendations they put forward. Once the report was completed, EAL teacher teacher Joan McDermott delivered it to Alan Fitzhenry on their behalf. Having read the report, Mr Fitzhenry visited the school where he, principal John Michael Porter, English teacher Paul Deavy, EAL teacher Joan McDermott and the students had a roundtable discussion in relation to the report.

The school’s big All Ireland football win that year was also celebrated at the event, which drew a crowd of past pupils from near and as far away as Sydney. Most of the players in the 1999 team were also in 6th Year that year, but some of their school teammates from the previous year who played in that epic final in Croke Park, also attended. The football team gathered early and perused memories from that year, while a video of the final played in one of the classrooms.

A book is being compiled featuring the history and stories about the Mountgarrett based school. Past and present students are invited to submit stories, poems, photographs etc about their memories of their own secondary school years, or anything which would add to what will surely be a fascinating book.

The building, which dates to the mid-1800s, has been in a state of disrepair for many years, and will finally have facilities befitting a town like New Ross – which has a strong tradition of scouting. “The project was fully approved in January of last year and the funding came in in April,” said New Ross Sea Scouts leader, Alex Kelly. The group got €178,000 in match funding, with the group having to come up with around €18,000. “The prices have increased since,” she said.

Shane, the famous Pogues lead singer and gifted lyricist, died peacefully on Thursday, November 30,with his wife Victoria and family by his side. Darren Byrne, from New Ross, played with Shane MacGowan and The Popes five times. Speaking from Munich, where he is performing, he said MacGowan was a very easy going, funny, generous fella. "He was always cracking jokes and doing his laugh.
