Shares of Capital One ( COF) and Discover ( DFS) rose early Monday, the first trading session since federal regulators on Friday approved their planned multibillion-dollar merger. Capital One's shares were up 3% shortly after today's open, while Discover's were about 5% higher. (Read Investopedia's live coverage of today's trading here.) Regulators on Friday approved Capital One's intended purchase of Discover, a deal that would create the country's biggest credit-card company.

He gave the keynote address at a company event later that month, coming onstage in sneakers and a suit, sans necktie, and admitting in a speech that "there are areas we have fallen short of your expectations." Still, Thursday afternoon will be the first quarterly earnings report and conference call under his leadership.

The first-quarter earnings season is off to a softish start by some measures, according to new research, but another quarter of year-on-year growth still looks likely. Based on preliminary results-just 12% of S&P 500 companies have reported results so far, according to an analysis released late Thursday by FactSet-70% of reporting companies in the benchmark index have come in above Street estimates. That's below the five- and 10-year averages, FactSet said.

Pulled lower by UnitedHealth Group's ( UNH) paring back of its forecasts for 2025-the news has the giant's shares down roughly 19% in early action-the group is dropping Thursday. (Read Investopedia's live coverage of today's trading here.) The S&P 500's health care sector was recently about 0.3% lower. Several other big insurance firms joined UnitedHealth in the list of top S&P 500 decliners today.
