Max Winkless left school at 13, was working as a truck driver’s ‘boy’ or offsider at 14, and after observing how each driver handled the steering, clutch and gears on a fleet of old Leyland Albions figured it wasn’t all that hard. By 15 and after a couple of opportunities at standing in for drivers, his boss told him if he had his licence he could work as a driver. The next day the driver he was assisting took him to the police station.

AbstractMuch of Western classical music relies on instruments based on acoustic resonance, which produce harmonic or quasi-harmonic sounds. In contrast, since the mid-twentieth century, popular music has increasingly been produced in recording studios, where it is not bound by the constraints of harmonic sounds. In this study, we use modified MPEG-7 features to explore and characterise the evolution of noise and inharmonicity in popular music since 1961.

One could ask, what’s the point in selling a range of products that stretch from market garden and forestry equipment right through to massive broadacre farming tractors from a site in the metropolitan area?
