The 36-year-old's career was now underway at last. The Courier was right there with him.

Smith kept up his interest in the temperance movement then dominating the country's news. Not that he was for abolishing all types of alcoholic beverages, but that a moderate and balanced viewpoint should be maintained. He enjoyed a good relaxing brew as much as anyone could.
